Return to Listing of Census
The information included here is my transcription of the 1850 Census
for Williamson County, Texas. Others have previously transcribed
this data and I have noted, at the end of the document, those works to
which I referred. Return to my home page

It was my intent to record what the census taker wrote. It was not my purpose to correct spelling or anything I believed to be an error. I did make one exception to this general rule. The census taker used " to indicate that a box should read the same as the box directly above it. A mark sometimes called 'ditto.' I took the liberty of filling in such boxes with the proper information. This is the only way that the database can be sorted while preserving all of the data. An alpha listing, for instance, is available for viewing at this web site.
Thirteen columns of information are found in the original census. For logistical reasons, I have shortened the headers of most columns. They appear on the actual census as follows:
1. Dwelling-houses numbered in the order of visitation.
2. Families numbered in the order of visitation.
3. The Name of every Person whose usual place of abode on the first day of June, 1850, was in this family.
Description - 4, 5, 6
4. Age
5. Sex
6. Color {White, black, or mulatto}
7. Profession, Occupation, or Trade of each Male Person over 15 years of age.
8. Value of Real Estate owned.
9. Place of Birth. Naming the State, Territory, or Country.
10. Married within the year. [While a single long line was used in the census, I have used three short dashes ---]
11. Attended School within the year. [The census taker used a " / " mark in this column; I have used the same.]
12. Persons over 20 y'rs of age who cannot read & write. [The census taker used a " / " mark in this column; I have used the same.]
13. Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper or convict.
I have included two additional columns. They appear below as the first and last columns. The first column is a unique number for each person appearing in the census, 1413 in all. The last column labeled "Notes" was added to include two pieces of information.
An * in the Notes column indicates that some datum on that line was unclear. The reader is referred to the end of this document by the asterisk and should refer to the person's ID # for clarification of the transcription. If other sources were consulted for clarification, that is also noted. Problems reading the document were very minor; the cases listed at the end of this document represent less than 1.5% of all of the records.
"S" followed by a number or question mark also appears in the Notes column. This refers to Schedule 2 of the census, that for Slave Inhabitants. The number that follows the "S" is the number of slaves listed under that individual's name on the Schedule 2. Unfortunately, the document that was used for creating the microfilm was torn and not all of the data for enslaved persons is available. The missing data calls a few of the slave owners into question. I used "S ?" to represent that the person may have been a slave holder. Further information may be available in the full document for Slave Inhabitants which is available at this web site. Although each slave is listed separately, the census did not include the slaves' names.
Some information appears at the top of each page of the census. That information is not repeated on each page, but is summarized in the three paragraphs that follow.
T. J. Allen appears on each page as the enumerator. According to the dates on each page, he began data collection on August 22nd and continued until September 18th. Every other page is stamped with a number beginning with 330 and continuing to 346. Forty-two entries appear per page. Below, I have divided the data by page. Pages are separated by my abbreviated column headers. Stamped page numbers appear on appropriate pages immediately before the ID# label. The unstamped pages are often referred to as x B where x is the page number of the previous page.
Each page of the census contains the same format. The census taker filled in blanks on the form. The underlinned information is what Mr. Allen wrote at the top of each page. The dates, of course, varied according to the day he collected the data.
